A Quiet Read

Alfred Augustus Glendening was a London landscape and genre painter, son of Alfred Augustus Glendening Senior, also a painter. The artist was taught by his father and he worked in oils and watercolours. The work of father and son often bears a striking resemblance.

Alfred Junior exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1881 to 1904 and also at Suffolk Street. Glendening Junior enjoyed a great deal of popularity in his time, mainly because he knew what the Victorian public liked and composed his paintings accordingly.

Orchard Window

While teaching at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts between 1909 and 1950, Daniel Garber divided his time between Bucks County and Philadelphia. Best known for his depictions of the countryside and quarries along the Delaware River, the artist was also noted for his large-scale figure compositions, which often incorporated family members. In The Orchard Window, Garber’s daughter Tanis is seated in front of a light-filled window that looks out to a vibrant flower garden. The scene takes place in the small stone cottage along the Cuttalossa Creek in Lumberville, Pennsylvania, that Garber acquired in 1915 with the intention of creating a rustic homestead that reflected his artistic vision.
